Saint Venerandus of Clermont

A senator of Auvergne born in the 4th century, Venerandus became Bishop of Clermont and was one of the illustrious figures of the Church of France in his time. He died in 423 and was buried at the monastery of Saint-Allyre, where many miracles were reported through his intercession.

    Origins and Episcopate

    Venerandus, hailing from the senatorial nobility of Auvergne, succeeded Saint Artemius on the episcopal see of the province.

    Venerand us was among the senators of Auve rgne. Hi s birth is placed around the middle of the 4th century.

    After the death of Saint Artemius, he was place d on the see of Auvergne, which was later transferred to t he city of Clermont. He occupied a distinguished rank in the Church of France, and he has been compared to the most illustrious bishops of his time.

    Death and succession

    The saint died in 423 and Saint Rusticus succeeded him; his tomb became a place of miracles.

    He died on December 24, 423, and was succeeded by Saint Rusti cus, commonly called Rotiri. The church that was built over his tomb was within the enclosure of the monaste ry of Saint-Allyre, near Clermont. Several miracles were performed through his intercession.
