Biography
Born in 1879 in a Calabrian village to a family of landowners, Gaetano Catanoso was ordained a priest in 1902 and exercised his entire ministry in the Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria.
Gaetano Catanoso was born on February 14, 1879, in Chorio di San Lorenzo, a hamlet in the Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria, into a wealthy family of deeply Christian landowners. Attracted to the priesthood from an early age, he entered the seminary of Reggio Calabria and was ordained a priest on September 20, 1902, by Cardinal Gennaro Portanova. He was first appointed pastor of the rural parish of Pentidattilo, where he remained from 1904 to 1921, serving a poor and isolated mountain population. Later transferred to Reggio Calabria, he became pastor of the Santa Maria della Candelora parish, which he led until about 1940. Throughout his life, he devoted himself tirelessly to preaching, catechesis, and above all to the ministry of confession, serving as a confessor in religious institutes, at the prison, at the hospital, and as spiritual director of the seminary. He died peacefully on April 4, 1963, in Reggio Calabria, at the motherhouse of the congregation he had founded.
Life and work
An apostle of devotion to the Holy Face of Christ, in December 1934 he founded the congregation of the Veronica Sisters of the Holy Face, dedicated to the service of the poor and isolated regions.
The major work of Gaetano Catanoso was the foundation, in December 1934, of the congregation of the Veronica Sisters of the Holy Face (Suore Veroniche del Volto Santo), also called the congregation of the Daughters of Saint Veronica, Missionaries of the Holy Face. He wished to transmit to his religious sisters the spirit of charity, humility, and sacrifice that had animated his entire life, and he destined them to the service of the poor, the sick, abandoned children, and isolated priests, particularly in the most remote and disadvantaged areas. This foundation extended a long prior apostolate: as early as the years 1918-1920, while he was parish priest of Pentidattilo, he had promoted a pious union and a confraternity of the Holy Face and launched a bulletin of the same name, in order to spread this devotion. The constitutions of the congregation received diocesan approval, and the institute, still active today, perpetuates his charism of concrete charity rooted in the contemplation of the face of Christ.
Journey toward holiness
His spirituality rested on daily Eucharist and the contemplation of the Holy Face, which he linked to a life of charity, humility, and service.
The holiness of Gaetano Catanoso was nourished by an intense Eucharistic life and a central devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, which he considered the heart of his spiritual life. During the canonization, Benedict XVI presented him as "a lover and apostle of the Holy Face of Jesus" and recalled that he closely linked this devotion to Eucharistic piety, teaching that the true face of Christ is found hidden under the veil of the host. Daily Mass and frequent Eucharistic adoration formed, according to the Pope, the foundation of his priesthood. His contemporaries highlighted his docility to ecclesiastical authority, his humility, his availability to the will of God, and his compassion toward abandoned children, the youth, the elderly, and isolated priests. This reputation for holiness, acquired during his long life as a confessor and a pastor attentive to the peripheries, supported the opening of his cause after his death.
Beatification and canonization
Beatified on May 4, 1997, by John Paul II and canonized on October 23, 2005, by Benedict XVI, Gaetano Catanoso is celebrated on April 4.
The beatification process recognized a first miracle attributed to his intercession, and Gaetano Catanoso was proclaimed blessed by Pope John Paul II on May 4, 1997. A second miracle was subsequently recognized for the canonization: according to several sources, it concerns the healing of Anna Pangallo, who was suffering from a rare form of meningitis, which occurred on January 9, 2003, in Reggio Calabria. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him on October 23, 2005, in Saint Peter's Square, during a ceremony proclaiming five new saints at the conclusion of the 11th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops and the Year of the Eucharist. His liturgical memorial is inscribed on April 4, the day of his death (dies natalis); the Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria, of which he was the first canonized diocesan priest, celebrates him, however, on September 20, the anniversary of his priestly ordination.
Spirituality and heritage
The first diocesan priest of Reggio Calabria to be canonized, he remains honored as the apostle of the Holy Face, and his legacy is perpetuated by the Veronica Sisters of the Holy Face.
Gaetano Catanoso remained a striking spiritual figure of Calabria, venerated as the "apostle of the Holy Face" and as the first diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria to be raised to sainthood. His most tangible legacy is the congregation of the Veronica Sisters of the Holy Face, which continues his work of charity among the poor and the most destitute today. The memory of the saint remains particularly alive in Pentidattilo, where the former rectory he inhabited preserves his memory, and in the city of Reggio Calabria, where the motherhouse of the institute is located and where he died. The spirituality of the Holy Face that he spread, linked to Eucharistic adoration, continues to inspire his religious sisters and the faithful attached to this devotion. His canonization by Benedict XVI confirmed the lasting influence of a humble and entirely given priestly life.
