    Biography

Youth and early years of family and spiritual dedication of Anna Maria Maddalena Giuseppina Bonino.

Anna Maria Maddalena Giuseppina Bonino was born on September 5, 1843, in Savigliano, Piedmont, into a wealthy and pious family. The only daughter of the physician Domenico Bonino and Giuseppa Ricci, she received a solid Christian education. In 1855, her family moved to Turin, where she studied with the Sisters of Saint Joseph. At 18, she made a temporary vow of virginity. Returning to Savigliano in 1869 to care for her sick father until his death in 1874, she became actively involved in her parish, presided over the Pious Union of the Daughters of Mary, and collaborated with the Colombo Work for orphans. She became affiliated with the Third Order of Saint Francis in 1876, and then with the Third Order of Carmel in 1877.

    Life and work

Miraculous healing, vocational discernment, and the foundation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Savigliano.

In 1876, suffering from a serious tumor of the spine, she underwent a painful operation and was miraculously healed through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. After a pilgrimage to Lourdes and the death of her mother at the end of 1877, she discerned her vocation with the Carmelites of Moncalieri and then the Visitandines of Pinerolo. Realizing that her mission was active, she founded in Savigliano the congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Savigliano under the direction of Canon Luigi Davicino. The institute was approved on September 8, 1887. She took the name Sister Giuseppina Gabriella of Jesus, dedicated her inheritance to the construction of the Mother House, and founded five other communities, notably in Loreto.

    Beatification and canonization

The recognition of the miracle of Sister Gemma Alloa and the celebration of the beatification by John Paul II.

The miracle accepted for her beatification is the inexplicable healing in September 1957 of Sister Gemma Alloa, who was suffering from severe colitis, ulcerative lesions, and bronchopneumonia. After prayers addressed to the foundress, the nun was healed instantaneously during the night of September 20. This miracle was approved by John Paul II on December 15, 1994. The Pope celebrated her beatification on May 7, 1995, in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican. Her liturgical feast is set for February 8.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

The charism of family charity, Eucharistic devotion, and the expansion of the congregation.

The spirituality of the Blessed rests on the imitation of the Holy Family of Nazareth, combining contemplation and action in humility and silence. Her charism of 'family charity' aims to offer a true home to orphans, the sick, and the elderly. Deeply Eucharistic, she centered her life on adoration. Today, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Savigliano continue their mission in Italy, as well as in Cameroon and Brazil.
