    Biography

The youth, formation, and priestly ordination of Pedro María Ramírez Ramos.

Blessed Pedro María Ramírez Ramos, known as the "Martyr of Armero," was born on October 23, 1899, in La Plata, in the department of Huila, Colombia. He was baptized the following day, October 24, 1899, by Father Cayetano de las Maravillas, a Spanish Trinitarian priest. He grew up in a deeply Catholic family, being the fourth of seven children of Ramón Ramírez and Isabel Ramos. At the age of twelve, he entered the minor seminary of La Mesa de Elías to pursue his secondary studies. On October 4, 1915, he joined the major seminary of Garzón (Seminary of Mary Immaculate) to study philosophy and theology. However, in 1920, plagued by deep doubts about his vocation and suffering from violent chronic headaches, he decided to leave the seminary. For eight years, he led an active lay life. He worked first as a secretary and director of the parish choir in Anolaima, then dedicated himself to teaching as a secondary school teacher in La Mesa de Elías, and later as a director of urban schools in Rivera, Colombia (Huila) and Alpujarra (Tolima). During this period, he considered marriage for a time, but realized with his fiancée that their respective vocations lay elsewhere (she would later enter a convent). Encouraged by Msgr. Pedro María Rodríguez Andrade, Bishop of Ibagué, he decided to resume his priestly formation in 1928 at the Mary Immaculate Major Seminary of Ibagué. He was ordained a priest on June 21, 1931.

    Mission 02 / 05

    Life and Work

Father Pedro María's pastoral ministry in various Colombian parishes.

After his ordination, Father Pedro María Ramírez Ramos was appointed parochial vicar in Chaparral, where he served from 1931 to 1934. In July 1934, he became pastor of the parish of Cunday, a ministry he held for nine years until 1943. In this parish, he carried out intense pastoral activity, regularly visiting the sick, revitalizing catechesis and parish associations, all while facing strong local Protestant influence. In 1943, he was transferred to the parish of El Fresno, where he remained for three years. Finally, in 1946, he was appointed pastor of the parish of San Lorenzo in Armero. In this city, characterized by strong political tensions and low religious practice, Father Pedro María gave of himself without reserve. He distinguished himself by his apostolic zeal, his deep Eucharistic piety, and his tireless devotion to the poor and the sick.

    Path to Holiness

The martyrdom of Father Pedro María in Armero on April 10, 1948, during the riots of La Violencia.

On April 9, 1948, the assassination in Bogota of the Liberal political leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán triggered violent riots throughout Colombia, marking the beginning of the period of civil war known as La Violencia. In Armero, the situation degenerated rapidly. Liberal and anti-clerical rioters accused the Catholic Church and Father Pedro María of supporting the Conservative party and being complicit in the assassination of Gaitán. Sensing the imminent danger, several local families and the Eucharistic Mercedarian sisters (notably the superior, Mother Miguelina de Jesús) begged the priest to flee the village to find safety. Father Pedro María categorically refused, stating that he could not abandon his parishioners in their time of need. On April 10, 1948, in the late afternoon, an angry mob invaded the church and the rectory under the pretext of searching for hidden weapons. After distributing the consecrated hosts to the sisters and writing his spiritual testament, the priest was dragged by force to the central square of Armero. Insulted and violently beaten, he was murdered with machete blows. His reported last words were: 'Father, forgive them! Everything for Christ!'. His body was desecrated, left in the square, and then thrown into a mass grave at the entrance of the cemetery without religious funeral rites. It was only a week later, after order was restored, that he received a decent Christian burial.

    Beatification and canonization

The recognition of martyrdom and the beatification by Pope Francis in 2017.

The cause for the beatification of Father Pedro María Ramírez Ramos was officially opened in 1993. On July 7, 2017, Pope Francis signed the decree recognizing his martyrdom in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith), thus paving the way for his beatification without the requirement of a miracle. On September 8, 2017, during his apostolic journey to Colombia, Pope Francis personally presided over the beatification mass of Father Pedro María Ramírez Ramos and Bishop Jesús Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve in Villavicencio, before a crowd of several hundred thousand faithful. In preparation for this event, on August 24, 2017, the relics of the "Martyr of Armero" were exhumed from the municipal cemetery and solemnly transferred during a grand procession to the San Sebastián church in La Plata (Huila), his hometown, where they are now exposed for the veneration of the faithful.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

The spiritual legacy, the martyr's testament, and his role as a symbol of reconciliation.

The spirituality of Blessed Pedro María Ramírez Ramos is deeply rooted in the love of the Eucharist, fidelity to his priestly ministry, and self-offering. A few hours before his martyrdom, sensing his end was near, he hastily wrote his spiritual testament in pencil on a scrap of paper, writing in particular: "For my part, I desire to die for Christ and his faith... To the most excellent bishop, my immense gratitude because, without deserving it, he made me a minister of the Most High, a priest of God, and today the parish priest of the people of Armero, for whom I want to shed my blood." Although local popular legends have long associated his death with an alleged curse he supposedly cast upon the town of Armero (which was tragically destroyed by the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in 1985), the Catholic Church reaffirmed during his beatification that he died forgiving his executioners and offering his life for the salvation of his people. Today, he remains in Colombia a model of pastoral fidelity, heroic forgiveness, and a powerful symbol of national reconciliation.
