Biography
Born in Italy, childhood in a peasant family, entry into the Franciscans with his twin brother, and priestly ordination.
Marcello Maruzzo was born on July 23, 1929, in Lapio, a hamlet in the municipality of Arcugnano, in the province of Vicenza, Italy. Coming from a family of poor Christian peasants, he was one of eight children of Angelo Maruzzo and Augusta Rappo. He shared his childhood and his vocation with his twin brother, Daniele. After the death of their mother in 1940, the two brothers entered the Seraphic College of the Friars Minor in Chiampo.
In 1945, Marcello took the Franciscan habit and took the religious name of Brother Tullio (his brother Daniele became Brother Lucio). He made his solemn vows on July 15, 1951. On June 21, 1953, the two twins were ordained priests in Venice by Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, then Patriarch of Venice and future Pope John XXIII. While his brother Lucio left for Central America in 1956, Father Tullio had to wait four years before receiving authorization to join him. He finally set sail for Guatemala in December 1960.
Life and Work
Pastoral ministry in Guatemala, commitment to poor peasants, and opposition from local authorities.
Upon his arrival in Guatemala in December 1960, Father Tullio Maruzzo was assigned to the Apostolic Vicariate of Izabal, a tropical region marked by extreme poverty, illiteracy, and profound social injustices. He exercised his ministry in several successive parishes: Puerto Barrios (1960-1963), Entre Ríos-Abacá (1963-1968), Morales (1968-1980), and finally Quiriguá (1981). In this vast territory, Father Tullio dedicated himself fully to evangelization and the human promotion of the campesinos (poor peasants). Sensitive to their distress in the face of land grabbing by large landowners (latifundistas), he actively committed himself to helping them defend their rights and cultivate their plots with dignity. He tirelessly traveled on foot or on horseback to dozens of isolated villages to administer the sacraments, teach the population to read and write, and train lay catechists, known as the Delegados de la Palabra (Delegates of the Word). His pastoral action and his defense of the rights of the most destitute drew the hostility of military authorities and local large landowners. In the context of the Guatemalan Civil War, any action in favor of social justice was then equated by the regime with subversive or communist activity. Despite increasingly specific death threats, Father Tullio refused to abandon his flock, choosing to continue his peaceful mission based solely on the Gospel.
Path to Holiness
Martyrdom of Father Tullio and his catechist Luis Obdulio Arroyo Navarro in 1981, and the opening of the cause for beatification.
On the evening of July 1, 1981, after presiding over a meeting of the Cursillos de Cristiandad (a spiritual renewal movement) in the town of Los Amates, Father Tullio Maruzzo began his journey home. He was accompanied by his driver and faithful catechist, Luis Obdulio Arroyo Navarro, a Guatemalan layman and Franciscan tertiary. Their vehicle was intercepted near a banana plantation by armed men. Both men were forced out of the car and shot at point-blank range. Their bodies were abandoned on the side of the road. Father Tullio died a martyr at the age of 51. The cause for beatification, promoted by the Franciscan province of Veneto, opened at the diocesan level in the Apostolic Vicariate of Izabal on January 30, 2006, and concluded on July 15, 2008. On October 9, 2017, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree officially recognizing their martyrdom in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith).
Beatification and canonization
Celebration of the beatification in Guatemala in 2018 and establishment of the liturgical memorial.
The beatification ceremony for Father Tullio Maruzzo and his lay companion Luis Obdulio Arroyo Navarro was celebrated on October 27, 2018, in Morales, in the department of Izabal, Guatemala. The celebration was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, representing Pope Francis. During his homily, Cardinal Becciu emphasized that the two new blesseds embodied the evangelical beatitudes through their simple lives, their zeal for peace, and their courageous defense of the least among us. Their liturgical memorial is set for July 1, the anniversary of their birth into heaven.
Spirituality and legacy
Franciscan spirituality of poverty and fraternity, and the lasting impact of his memory in Guatemala and Italy.

Described by his contemporaries as a gentle, patient, and humble man, he drew his strength and prophetic courage from an intense life of prayer and contemplation.
