    Biography

The youth of María López de Rivas Martínez, from her birth in Tartanedo to her entry into the Carmel of Toledo under the patronage of Saint Teresa of Avila.

María López de Rivas Martínez was born on August 18, 1560, in Tartanedo, in the province of Guadalajara, Spain, into a noble family. She was the daughter of Antonio López de Rivas and Elvira Martínez. Orphaned of her father at the age of four, she was raised in a Christian manner by her paternal grandparents in Molina de Aragón after her mother remarried. There, she received a careful education, both intellectually and spiritually. In her adolescence, she felt a keen attraction to religious life. Her confessor, the Jesuit priest A. de Castro, guided her toward the Reformed Carmel. On August 12, 1577, she was presented to the monastery of the Discalced Carmelites of Toledo, recently founded by Saint Teresa of Avila. The latter, immediately discerning the young girl's exceptional gifts, wrote to the community to warmly recommend her: "I would gladly give fifty thousand ducats for her. Do not look at her like the others, for I hope in God that she will be a prodigy." María took the habit that same day and pronounced her solemn vows on September 8, 1578.

    Life and Work

The sixty-three years of religious life of Mary of Jesus at the Carmel of Toledo, marked by community responsibilities and trials overcome with patience.

The life of Mary of Jesus unfolded almost entirely within the Carmel of Toledo, where she spent 63 years of religious life. The only notable exception was a stay of a few months in 1585 at the monastery of Cuerva, which she helped to found as mistress of novices. Despite extremely fragile health and continual physical suffering, she refused any dispensation from the rule and assumed numerous duties within her community. She was successively sacristan, infirmarian, mistress of novices (a role she held eight times), sub-prioress, and then prioress. She was elected prioress for the first time in 1591. In 1600, during her second term as prioress, she was the victim of unfounded slander by another nun. The provincial visitor, Alonso de Jesús María, gave credence to these accusations, removed her from her office, and inflicted severe punishments upon her. Mary of Jesus endured this trial, which she experienced as a profound "dark night," with heroic patience and an unalterable love for her persecutors. Her reputation was finally restored, and she was elected prioress again in 1624.

    Journey toward holiness

The mystical gifts of Mary of Jesus, her privileged relationship with Saint Teresa of Avila, and the recognition of her heroic virtues.

Mary of Jesus was graced with numerous mystical gifts, such as ecstasies, visions, the gift of prophecy, and, according to tradition, the stigmata of the Passion. She maintained a privileged spiritual relationship with Saint Teresa of Avila, who affectionately called her "mi letradillo" (my little doctor or my little scholar) because of her keen intelligence and profound theological wisdom. Saint Teresa even submitted her own manuscripts for her review, notably that of the Interior Castle (Las Moradas). After her death on September 13, 1640, in Toledo, her remains were interred in the Carmelite church of Toledo, where her body was discovered incorrupt. The reputation for holiness that surrounded her during her lifetime prompted the community to collect testimonies as early as 1640-1642 with a view to her canonization. However, various historical vicissitudes delayed the investigation of her cause. The formal process progressed in the 20th century, leading to the declaration of the heroic nature of her virtues by Pope Paul VI on June 22, 1972.

    Beatification and canonization

The solemn beatification of Mary of Jesus by Pope Paul VI in 1976 in Rome.

Mary of Jesus López Rivas was solemnly beatified on November 14, 1976, by Pope Paul VI in Saint Peter's Square in Rome. During the ceremony, the Sovereign Pontiff presented her as a model of contemplative life and an authentic reflection of Theresian spirituality. Her beatification followed the official recognition of a miraculous healing attributed to her intercession.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

The Christocentric spirituality of Mary of Jesus, her preserved writings, and the celebration of her liturgical memory.

The spirituality of Blessed Mary of Jesus is deeply Christocentric, centered on the contemplation of the mysteries of the Lord's Passion, the Sacred Heart, and the Precious Blood. She also nurtured a tender devotion toward the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary, particularly in the mystery of her Assumption. Although she burned the majority of her spiritual notebooks out of obedience to her confessors, several of her writings have been preserved. Among them are her Epistolario (published in 1919), as well as her official depositions during the beatification processes of Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross. Her liturgical feast is inscribed in the Roman Martyrology on September 13, the day of her birth into heaven. However, within the Order of Carmel, her memory was long celebrated on September 12, before being recently fixed to September 11 so as not to coincide with the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary.
