    Biography

Youth, family, and spiritual discernment of Francisco Tomás Márquez Sánchez in Alpandeire.

Francisco Tomás Márquez Sánchez was born on June 24, 1864, in Alpandeire, a small mountain village in the province of Málaga, Spain. He was the eldest son of Diego Márquez Ayala and Jerónima Sánchez Jiménez, humble and hardworking peasants. Baptized on June 29, 1864, under the name Francisco Tomás de San Juan Bautista, he grew up in a close-knit Christian family, surrounded by his brothers Diego and Juan Miguel, and his sister María Teresa. From his childhood, young Francisco Tomás led a simple life, working in the fields and tending his family's herds of goats and sheep. He quickly distinguished himself by his natural piety, his gentleness, and his early charity, willingly sharing his meals with other, more destitute shepherds. On September 11, 1891, he received the sacrament of confirmation from the hands of the Bishop of Málaga, Msgr. Marcelo Spínola y Maestre (future blessed). After completing his military service in 1887-1888 in an infantry regiment, Francisco Tomás went through a period of spiritual discernment, marked in particular by the loss of his brother Juan Miguel during the Cuban War. The decisive turning point of his life occurred in May 1895 in Ronda, during the solemn celebrations of the triduum in honor of the beatification of the Capuchin Diego José de Cádiz. Deeply moved by the preaching and the recollection of the Capuchin friars, he decided to dedicate his life to God within this order.

    Life and Work

Entry into the Capuchins and ministry as a questing friar in Granada for more than forty years.

In August 1899, Francisco Tomás was admitted as a postulant to the Capuchin convent in Seville. On November 16 of the same year, he received the Capuchin habit and the religious name of Brother Leopold of Alpandeire. He made his simple vows on November 16, 1900. After working as a horticulturist and gardener in the convents of Seville, Antequera, and Granada, he was transferred to Granada in the autumn of 1903. It was there, on November 23, 1903, that he made his solemn vows (perpetual profession) into the hands of the convent superior, Father Francisco de Mendieta. After a brief stay in Seville in 1913 as a porter friar, he returned permanently to Granada on February 21, 1914. It was in Granada that Brother Leopold would accomplish his life's work by receiving the charge of questing friar (limosnero). For more than forty years, he tirelessly walked the streets of the city and the villages of Eastern Andalusia, a satchel (alforja) over his shoulder, to beg for food and alms intended for the convent and the poor. Over the decades, his figure became familiar and beloved by all. With every donation or request for prayer, Brother Leopold proposed reciting three Hail Marys (tres Avemarías), which earned him the affectionate nickname of the "humble questing friar of the three Hail Marys." Even during periods of strong anti-clerical tensions linked to the Second Spanish Republic and the Civil War, he faced insults and threats with heroic gentleness, patience, and forgiveness.
