    Biography

    Birth and youth of Teresa Demjanovich in New Jersey, her Ruthenian origins and her studies.

    Teresa Demjanovich was born on March 26, 1901, in Bayonne, New Jersey, in the United States. She was the youngest of seven children of Alexander Demjanovich and Johanna Suchy, Ruthenian immigrants from eastern Slovakia. She grew up in a deeply Christian home. On March 31, 1901, she received the sacraments of baptism and confirmation according to the Ruthenian Byzantine rite at Saint John the Baptist Greek Catholic Church in Bayonne. After graduating from Bayonne High School in January 1917, she had to delay her entry into the Carmel to care for her mother, who died in November 1918 from the Spanish flu. In September 1919, she began higher education at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, earning her degree in June 1923. She then taught at the Academy of Saint Aloysius in Jersey City. After the death of her father on January 30, 1925, she entered the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth on February 11, 1925, under the name Sister Miriam Teresa.

    Sister Miriam Teresa received the religious habit on May 17, 1925. She continued to teach while leading her life as a novice. Her spiritual director, the Benedictine Father Benedict Bradley, OSB, asked her to write spiritual conferences for the other novices. Read anonymously by Father Bradley, these 26 conferences of great theological depth were published after her death under the title Greater Perfection. In November 1926, she fell seriously ill with acute appendicitis. She pronounced her perpetual vows in articulo mortis on April 2, 1927, and passed away on May 8, 1927, at the hospital in Elizabeth, at the age of 26.

    The reputation for holiness of Sister Miriam Teresa spread rapidly after her death thanks to her writings. Her cause for beatification and canonization was officially introduced on June 19, 1980. The diocesan process took place in 1981. On May 10, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, declaring her Venerable. On December 17, 2013, Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to her intercession, paving the way for her beatification.

    The miracle accepted for her beatification is the scientifically unexplained healing of a young American boy suffering from blindness in the 1960s, after receiving a relic of Sister Miriam Teresa. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on October 4, 2014, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato on behalf of Pope Francis. It is the first beatification celebrated on United States soil. Her liturgical feast is set for May 8, and her remains rest at Convent Station.
