Biography
The youth, education, and early career in the judiciary of Rosario Livatino in Sicily.
Blessed Rosario Angelo Livatino was born on October 3, 1952, in Canicattì, in the province of Agrigento in Sicily (Italy). The only child of Vincenzo Livatino, an employee of the municipal tax administration, and Rosalia Corbo, he grew up in a home deeply marked by Christian values. During his secondary studies at the Ugo Foscolo classical high school in Canicattì, he was actively involved in Catholic Action. In 1971, he enrolled in the Faculty of Jurisprudence at the University of Palermo, from which he graduated with honors on July 9, 1975. After working briefly as deputy director at the Agrigento Registry Office between 1977 and 1978, he successfully passed the entrance examination for the judiciary. He began his career on July 18, 1978, as a judicial auditor at the court of Caltanissetta.
Life and work
His courageous action as a deputy prosecutor and judge against organized crime, leading to his assassination.
On September 24, 1979, Rosario Livatino was appointed deputy prosecutor of the Republic at the court of Agrigento. In a Sicily then plagued by a violent mafia war between Cosa Nostra and the Stidda (a local criminal organization), the young magistrate distinguished himself by his professional rigor and absolute integrity. Refusing any escort so as not to endanger the lives of others, he led large-scale investigations against organized crime, notably the 'maxiprocesso of Agrigento'. He specialized in the seizure and confiscation of assets of illicit origin accumulated by mafia clans. His efficiency was such that the High Council of the Judiciary (CSM) recognized him as the most productive magistrate of the Agrigento prosecutor's office between 1984 and 1988. On August 21, 1989, he took up his duties as a judge of the criminal section at the court of Agrigento. On the morning of September 21, 1990, while driving alone to the court in his Ford Fiesta on the SS 640 national road, he was chased by a commando of four Stidda killers. Wounded by gunfire, he tried to flee through the fields, but he was caught and coldly murdered at the age of 37.
Path to holiness
The recognition of his martyrdom in odium fidei by the Catholic Church.
The reputation of holiness and martyrdom of Rosario Livatino spread immediately after his death. On May 9, 1993, during his historic visit to Agrigente, Pope John Paul II met the magistrate's parents and publicly described him as a "martyr of justice and, indirectly, of the faith." The diocesan cause for beatification was officially opened on September 21, 2011, the 21st anniversary of his death, in the diocese of Agrigente, and concluded in 2018. On December 21, 2020, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree recognizing his martyrdom in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith). The Church thus recognizes that his assassins targeted him not only as a servant of the State, but because of the absolute consistency between his Christian faith and his pursuit of justice, which made him totally incorruptible in the face of criminal pressures.
Beatification and canonization
The beatification ceremony in Agrigento, the presentation of his relics, and the establishment of his liturgical memorial.
Rosario Angelo Livatino was proclaimed blessed on May 9, 2021, during a solemn mass celebrated in the Cathedral of San Gerlando in Agrigento. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, on behalf of Pope Francis. The date chosen was highly symbolic, corresponding to the 28th anniversary of John Paul II's historic call for the conversion of mafiosi in the Valley of the Temples.
Since he was beatified as a martyr, no miracle was required for this stage. During the celebration, his bloodstained shirt, worn on the day of his assassination, was presented as a relic. Initially buried in the family tomb in Canicattì, his body was transferred on May 10, 2025, to the Church of Santa Chiara in Canicattì, which is destined to become his shrine. His liturgical memorial is set for October 29, the anniversary of his confirmation received at the age of 35.
Spirituality and legacy
His spiritual life under the gaze of God (Sub tutela Dei) and his legacy among magistrates.
The spiritual life of Rosario Livatino rested on a profound unity between his Christian faith and his professional duty. In his personal notebooks and work agendas, he systematically inscribed at the top of the page the acronym "S.T.D.", for Sub tutela Dei (Under the protection of God), placing every decision under the divine gaze. Each morning, before entering the courthouse, he would stop to pray before the Blessed Sacrament in the church of San Giuseppe in Agrigente. For him, justice and charity were inseparable, two expressions of the same divine truth. He left behind a famous reflection that summarizes his demand for consistency: "When we die, no one will come to ask us how much we have been believers, but credible." His legacy remains alive through the "Centro Studi Rosario Livatino," a legal study center founded in his honor to promote natural law and ethics. In May 2026, during their 82nd General Assembly, the Italian bishops (CEI) unanimously approved the request to proclaim Blessed Rosario Angelo Livatino patron of Italian magistrates, highlighting the relevance of his testimony of inner freedom and independence.
