Biography
Birth and youth of Gaetana Tolomeo in Catanzaro, marked by early paralysis and family trials.
Gaetana Tolomeo, affectionately nicknamed "Nuccia," was born on April 10, 1936, in Catanzaro, in the Calabria region of Italy, on Good Friday. Her civil registration took place on April 19, 1936, the date chosen for her liturgical memorial. She was baptized on July 12, 1936, in the church of the Madonna del Rosario by Father Teodoro Diaco. At the age of two, Nuccia was struck by a progressive and deforming paralysis that condemned her to spend her entire existence confined to a bed or a chair. Her parents, Salvatore Tolomeo and Carmela Palermo, tried in vain to find treatment in Piedmont. Upon returning to Catanzaro, she faced a difficult family situation with an alcoholic and violent father, whose suffering she offered for his conversion. Surrounded by her mother, her cousins, and friends, she received a basic education. Her younger brother Giuliano died prematurely around 1944. Her father passed away, converted, in 1980, and her mother in 1993. Nuccia passed away peacefully on January 24, 1997, at the age of 60.
Life and work
Nuccia's commitment to Catholic Action and her radio apostolate for people in distress.
Despite her immobility, Nuccia Tolomeo joined Catholic Action and dedicated herself to prayer, particularly Eucharistic Adoration and the Rosary. In 1952, during a pilgrimage to Lourdes, she offered herself as a victim of love for the conversion of sinners and the sanctification of priests. Her room became a place of comfort and spiritual direction for many visitors.
In 1994, her mission expanded through her collaboration with the station "Radio Maria," where she participated in the program Il Fratello hosted by Federico Quaglini. From her bed, she addressed prisoners, drug addicts, prostitutes, and families in crisis, transmitting messages of faith and hope to them.
Path to holiness
Nuccia's reputation for holiness after her death and the opening of her cause for beatification.
After her death on January 24, 1997, her reputation for holiness grew. On November 1, 2010, her mortal remains were transferred to the Crucifix chapel of the church of Monte dei Morti e della Misericordia in Catanzaro. The cause for beatification and canonization was opened at the diocesan level in 2009 by Archbishop Mgr. Antonio Ciliberti, and concluded under Mgr. Vincenzo Bertolone. On April 6, 2019, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, conferring upon her the title of Venerable.
Beatification and canonization
The recognition of a resolved ectopic pregnancy miracle and the celebration of her beatification in 2021.
The path to beatification was sealed by the recognition of a miracle that occurred in 2014. A pregnant woman from Catanzaro presented with an ectopic pregnancy in the cervical canal. After refusing the advised abortion and invoking the intercession of Nuccia Tolomeo, an ultrasound revealed the unexplained repositioning of the fetus into the uterine cavity, allowing for the birth of a perfectly healthy boy.
On September 29, 2020, Pope Francis approved this miracle. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on October 3, 2021, at the Basilica of Maria Santissima Immacolata in Catanzaro by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, on behalf of the Holy Father, alongside Maria Antonia Samà.
Spirituality and legacy
A spirituality centered on the Cross and the offering of suffering as an instrument of salvation.
The spirituality of Nuccia Tolomeo is deeply Christocentric and Marian, anchored in the mystery of the Cross. She saw in her disability an intimate participation in the Passion of Christ for the salvation of souls. Defining herself as a "weak creature in whom the power of God deigns to work every day," she left a legacy as an "apostle of consolation," showing that suffering transfigured by divine grace can become a vector of hope.

I am Nuccia, I am 60 years old, all spent in a bed; my body is twisted, I must depend on others for everything, but my spirit has remained young. The secret of my youth and my joy of living is Jesus. Hallelujah!
