Biography
The youth of Maria Elisabetta Mazza, her training as a teacher, and her initial spiritual and educational commitments in Italy.
Maria Elisabetta Mazza, nicknamed "Bettina," was born on January 21, 1886, in Martinengo into a wealthy family. After the death of her mother in 1894, she was raised by her aunt Lucia in Mornico al Serio. She studied at the Saint-Benoît boarding school in 1901, then joined the Third Order of Saint Francis in 1904 under the name Maria Crocifissa. Although drawn to monastic life, she turned toward teaching on the advice of her spiritual director, Father Bernardino Gavazzeni. Qualifying as a teacher in 1911, she taught in Mornico al Serio and became involved in the "Niccolò Tommaseo" association. She took her vows of chastity in 1914 and obedience in 1915 under the guidance of Father Luigi Sonzogni.
Life and Work
The foundation of the Institute of the Little Apostles of the Christian School and the development of its educational work.
On November 13, 1917, Father Luigi Sonzogni proposed to Maria Elisabetta Mazza that she found a religious institute whose members would wear secular clothing to teach freely in public schools. She began a community life in 1924 in Bergamo with Camilla and Clelia Facchinetti. In 1936, Bishop Adriano Bernareggi canonically erected the "Pious Association of the Little Apostles of the Christian School." Maria Elisabetta left public teaching in 1938 to lead the institute. After the war, she participated in the educational reconstruction of Italy and organized summer camps. Exhausted, she died on August 29, 1950. The institute became a congregation in 1964 and established itself in Ecuador in 1986.
Path to holiness
The opening of the cause of beatification of Maria Elisabetta Mazza and the diocesan inquiry in Bergamo.
The reputation of holiness of Maria Elisabetta Mazza led to the official opening of her cause for beatification and canonization in the diocese of Bergamo. The diocesan inquiry took place from May 9, 1989, to December 4, 1992, allowing for the collection of documentary evidence and the hearing of eighty-two witnesses. The validity of this inquiry was officially recognized by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints through a decree dated February 12, 1994.
Beatification and canonization
The recognition of the heroic virtues of Maria Elisabetta Mazza by Pope Francis in 2017.
After the examination of her writings and her life by theological consultants, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues on July 7, 2017. Maria Elisabetta Mazza was thus declared venerable. For her beatification, the official recognition of a miracle attributed to her intercession is required, but no miracle has yet been the subject of a validation decree.
Spirituality and legacy
The secular educational charism of the foundress and the continuity of her work in Italy and abroad.
The spirituality of Maria Elisabetta Mazza is Christocentric, Marian, and marked by the Third Order of Saint Francis as well as by Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Her legacy rests on a modern vision of secular consecration, allowing teachers to act discreetly within the public school system. She collaborated closely with the clergy, notably with Father Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (the future Pope John XXIII). Today, the Little Apostles continue her mission in Italy and Ecuador. A museum has been dedicated to her in Bergamo since 2011.
