Biography
The life of João de Oliveira Matos Ferreira, from his birth in Valverde to his ministry as auxiliary bishop of Guarda.
João de Oliveira Matos Ferreira was born on March 1, 1879, in Valverde, in the municipality of Fundão (Castelo Branco district, Portugal). He was the son of António de Oliveira Matos Ferreira, a primary school teacher and public works employee, and Ana Candida da Natividade Ferreira. The eldest of several children, one of whom would also become a priest, he felt the call to the priesthood very early on. At the age of 17, in September 1896, he entered the seminary of Guarda. After brilliant theological studies completed in July 1899, he was ordained a priest on March 28, 1903, in the chapel of the episcopal palace of Viseu. He celebrated his first mass on April 3, 1903, in the parish church of Fundão.
Initially a coadjutor in Covilhã, he then taught at the seminary of Mondego from 1904 to 1910. Appointed parish priest of Celorico da Beira in 1912, he distinguished himself there by his pastoral zeal and his attention to the most destitute, founding an asylum and the parish newspaper A Voz do Pároco. In 1915, he became the personal secretary to the Archbishop of Braga, Msgr. Manuel Vieira de Matos. In May 1920, he was appointed apostolic visitor of the diocese of Guarda. On December 11, 1922, Pope Pius XI appointed him auxiliary bishop of Guarda and titular bishop of Aureliopolis in Lydia. He received episcopal consecration on July 25, 1923, in the cathedral of Guarda at the hands of Msgr. José Alves Matoso. He exercised his ministry as auxiliary bishop with tireless devotion to the faithful and the poor until his death, which occurred on August 29, 1962, in Guarda.
Life and Work
The foundation of the League of the Servants of Jesus and the development of social and educational works.
The heart of the work of João de Oliveira Matos Ferreira lies in the foundation of the League of the Servants of Jesus (Liga dos Servos de Jesus), initiated on February 11, 1924. This foundation followed a period of spiritual retreat and discernment led by the bishop, notably in Ruvina, where he drafted the first constitutions of the association. Conceived with the help of the Dinis da Fonseca family (notably from Rochoso), the League is a public association of the faithful that brings together men and women, married or single, desiring to live in the manner of the first Christians under the motto: "É preciso que Jesus reine" (It is necessary that Jesus reign).
The institute is organized around two branches: - The Internal Servants (Servos Internos): they live in a stable community and commit themselves to practicing the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. - The External Servants (Servos Externos): they live in their own family and professional environment while actively engaging in apostolate and evangelization.
The League spread rapidly in many parishes of the Diocese of Guarda and beyond, collaborating closely with parish priests for liturgical animation, catechesis, visiting the sick, and the distribution of good press. At the same time, Msgr. de Oliveira Matos developed a large-scale social and educational work to respond to the material and moral misery of his time, marked by political instability and poverty. He thus founded the Institute of São Miguel (with Alberto Dinis da Fonseca) to welcome, assist, and provide professional training to children and young people from disadvantaged families. He also created several reception homes, youth centers, and schools (such as the Gaiatos school of Guarda or the Sagrada Família shelter in Sequeira) to protect and educate abandoned youth. The work of the League subsequently extended to other dioceses in Portugal and has more recently been established in Angola (notably in Quilenda).
Path to Holiness
The reputation for holiness of Bishop de Oliveira Matos and the introduction of his cause for beatification.
After his death in 1962, the reputation for holiness of Bishop João de Oliveira Matos Ferreira continued to grow among the faithful of the Diocese of Guarda and the members of the League of the Servants of Jesus. His tomb, initially located in the Guarda cemetery, became a place of pilgrimage and devotion. On October 21, 1972, his remains were solemnly transferred to the new church of Outeiro de São Miguel, at the heart of the work he founded.
Due to the insistence of the faithful and with the agreement of the Portuguese episcopate gathered at Fatima in November 1988, the cause for beatification and canonization was officially introduced. The diocesan process was opened on November 29, 1993 (or January 30, 1994, depending on the formal sessions) and concluded solemnly on May 3, 1998. The documents of the diocesan inquiry, comprising 23 volumes, were submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome in May-June 1998. The validity of the diocesan process was decreed on November 13, 1998. The Positio, a summary document demonstrating the heroic nature of his virtues, was officially filed in Rome in September 2008.
Beatification and canonization
The recognition of the heroic nature of his virtues by Pope Francis and the examination of an alleged miracle.
On June 3, 2013, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree recognizing the heroic nature of the virtues of João de Oliveira Matos Ferreira, thereby conferring upon him the title of Venerable.
To pave the way for his beatification, the approval of a miracle attributed to his intercession is required. To this end, a diocesan process concerning the examination of an unexplained healing presumed to be miraculous was opened by the Diocese of Guarda. After hearing witnesses and medical experts, this diocesan inquiry into the alleged miracle was officially closed on February 6, 2010, during a solemn session at the diocesan tribunal of Outeiro de São Miguel, before being transmitted to Rome for examination by the medical commission of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
Spirituality and legacy
The bishop's Eucharistic, Marian, and ecclesial spirituality, and the enduring nature of his work.

His pastoral action and spiritual writings (notably his articles published in the newspaper O Amigo da Verdade) reveal a man entirely consumed by the love of God and the salvation of souls.
