Biography
Birth in Airole, entry into the Franciscans, and priestly ordination in Genoa.
Carlo Antonio Serafino Viale was born in Airole, in Liguria (Italy), on the night of February 27 to 28, 1830. The son of Alessandro Viale and Maria Caterina Viale, he grew up in a deep faith after the loss of his mother at the age of five, influenced by his Franciscan uncle, Father Pacifico Viale. At 14, he entered the boarding school of the Bishop of Ventimiglia, Msgr. Lorenzo Biale. In 1847, he received the Franciscan habit in Oregina (Genoa) under the name of Brother Giacomo. He pronounced his solemn vows on August 29, 1848, and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1852, thanks to a papal dispensation.
Life and work
Pastoral ministry in Bordighera, restoration of churches, and foundation of charitable works.
After the forced exile from Genoa in 1861 due to the suppression of religious orders, Father Giacomo was sent to Bordighera in 1863. Appointed parish priest of Saint Mary Magdalene in 1869, he exercised his ministry there for nearly fifty years. Nicknamed "U fratin," he restored the parish church and that of Sant'Ampelio, and had the church of the Immaculate Conception built with the help of the architect Charles Garnier. He founded the Saint Joseph hospice for the poor elderly and a night shelter. He also collaborated with personalities of all denominations to finance his works.
Journey toward holiness
Life of intense prayer, inherited charity, and patience in the face of illness until his death in 1912.
Father Giacomo led a life of intense prayer, marked by long hours of nocturnal adoration, evangelical poverty, and absolute devotion to the destitute. Afflicted by a painful prostatitis at the end of his life, he endured the illness with heroic patience. After a stay at the hospital in Sanremo, he passed away holily in Bordighera on Tuesday, April 16, 1912.
Beatification and canonization
Opening of the cause for beatification and recognition of the heroic nature of his virtues by Pope Francis.
The reputation for holiness of Father Giacomo Viale led to the opening of his cause for beatification. The ordinary informative process took place in the Diocese of Ventimiglia-San Remo from 1937 to 1946, supplemented by a rogatory process in Naples in 1941. On July 8, 2016, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, conferring upon him the title of Venerable.
Spirituality and legacy
Franciscan ideal of poverty and the enduring nature of his social work in Bordighera.
Rooted in the Franciscan ideal of poverty, simplicity, and perfect joy, Father Giacomo's spirituality reconciles intense contemplation with avant-garde social action.
