Biography
The life of Angelina Pirini from her birth in 1922 in Celle di Sala to her early years of devotion and apprenticeship.
Angelina Pirini was born on March 30, 1922, in Celle di Sala, a hamlet in the municipality of Cesenatico, in the province of Forlì-Cesena (Emilia-Romagna, Italy). She was the eldest daughter of Luigi Pirini and Dina Savini, a couple of modest farmers of deep faith. She had three younger sisters: Rosina, Giuliana, and Anna. Angelina grew up in the simplicity of a rural environment whose social and spiritual life revolved around the parish of Sala. She attended the nursery school run by the Canossian and Franciscan sisters, then continued her schooling at the local primary school until the fifth grade. From a very young age, she actively helped her mother with household chores and took care of her younger sisters. At the age of twelve, she began learning the trade of a seamstress at a neighbor's house, an activity she would pursue until the onset of her illness in 1937. Angelina's spiritual life awakened very early. She received the sacrament of confirmation at the age of six. On June 15, 1930, she made her first communion. This event marked a turning point: from that day on, she made the resolution to attend morning mass daily. Whether it was sweltering heat in summer or snowing in winter, she would go to church at dawn, sometimes lighting her way with a simple candle or a lantern, and spend long moments in prayer, on her knees, with her hands joined.
Life and work
Her commitment within Catholic Action under the direction of Father Giuseppe Marchi and her role as an educator.
The year 1934 was decisive for Angelina's spiritual and apostolic journey. It was then that a new parish priest arrived at the parish of Sala, Father Giuseppe Marchi. He undertook to revitalize the community by refounding the parish Catholic Action (Azione Cattolica) and promoting a spirituality centered on the Eucharist and the Passion of Christ, according to the association's motto: "prayer, action, sacrifice." Father Marchi became Angelina's spiritual director. On December 8, 1934, Father Marchi appointed Angelina, then twelve years old, as delegate of the Beniamine (the section for the youngest girls of Catholic Action). In 1937, she was appointed delegate of the Aspiranti (the aspirants) and subsequently became president of the parish women's section of the Catholic Action Young Women's branch. Angelina proved to be an educator of great finesse. Endowed with a deep psychological sensitivity, she knew how to make herself loved by the children, transmitting to them the love of God with tenderness and gentleness. Her apostolic zeal and spiritual balance exerted a contagious influence not only on the young girls in her charge, but also on their families, thus contributing to the spiritual renewal of the entire parish. Her meeting with Blessed Armida Barelli, a major figure of the Catholic Action Young Women's branch in Italy, strengthened her desire to dedicate herself entirely to the Lord in the heart of the world.
Journey toward holiness
Her illness, her vows of chastity and obedience, and her offering of her life as a victim of love.
On July 9, 1937, Angelina was seized with violent abdominal pains. Transported urgently to the hospital in Cesenatico, she underwent surgery for a perforated appendix. Although the operation was successful, the pain persisted and intensified. After several examinations and hospitalizations, doctors diagnosed intestinal tuberculosis (tisi intestinale) at a stage already too advanced to be cured. Far from becoming discouraged, Angelina welcomed the illness as an opportunity to unite herself more intimately with the Passion of Christ. She chose to offer her physical and moral sufferings for the redemption of the world, the sanctification of priests, and the salvation of souls. Her spiritual journey was marked by deep commitments: On December 8, 1936 (renewed in 1937), with the authorization of her spiritual director, she made a private vow of virginity. On June 16, 1938, the day of the feast of Corpus Domini (Corpus Christi), she bound herself definitively to Jesus through a vow of perpetual chastity and offered herself as a victim of love and reparation (voto di vittima). On February 11, 1939, she made a vow of obedience to her spiritual director. At the request of Don Marchi, she recorded her interior experiences and mystical impulses in a spiritual diary and written reports (Resoconti spirituali). In them, she expressed her ardent desire to make God loved: "I would like to be in every part of the earth to speak to souls about the love of God." Feeling her end approaching, she wrote on September 30, 1940, two days before her death, a testament-letter addressed to the young girls of her parish: "I, dear children, offer with joy my young life to Jesus for your sanctification: I die, therefore, by immolating myself particularly for you." She passed away peacefully in the night between October 1 and 2, 1940, at twenty minutes past midnight, at the age of 18.
Beatification and canonization
The process of recognizing her heroic virtues leading to her declaration as Venerable by Pope Francis in 2024.
The reputation of holiness of Angelina Pirini, particularly vivid within her parish and the diocese of Cesena-Sarsina, led to the opening of her cause for beatification. The diocesan inquiry process into her life and virtues was officially opened on October 12, 1985, by the bishop of the diocese. The diocesan inquiry was closed on October 28, 1989, and the file was transmitted to Rome, to the Congregation (now Dicastery) for the Causes of Saints. On March 25, 2001, her body was exhumed and solemnly transferred to a marble sarcophagus located near the altar of Saint Maria Goretti, in the parish church of Santa Maria del Rosario in Sala di Cesenatico. On March 14, 2024, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, thus officially granting her the title of Venerable.
Spirituality and legacy
Her Eucharistic and Marian spirituality inspired by the little way, and the action of the association that preserves her memory.
Angelina Pirini's spirituality is deeply Eucharistic, Marian, and marked by the "little way" of spiritual childhood (inspired by Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus). She conceived of her life as a "living host," finding in the contemplation of the Blessed Sacrament the strength to live out her apostolate and to endure her sufferings. Her legacy is today preserved and disseminated by the association "Amici di Angelina Pirini" (Friends of Angelina Pirini), in close collaboration with the parish of Sala and the postulation of her cause. She remains a luminous model of lay holiness for contemporary youth, illustrating what Pope Francis calls the "holiness of the next-door neighbor": a total fidelity to Christ lived out in the ordinary circumstances of daily life, work, and associative commitment.
