Biography
The youth, marriage, and early widowhood of Eliswa Vakayil in Kerala.
Eliswa Vakayil, known by her religious name Eliswa of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was born on October 15, 1831, in Ochanthuruth, in the state of Kerala, India. Coming from a wealthy family of landowners, the Vyppissery Capithan family, she received a careful education from her parents, Thomman and Thanda. At the age of 16, in 1847, she married Vareethu Vakayil, a wealthy merchant from Koonammavu. A daughter, Anna, was born from this union on April 21, 1850. Her husband died suddenly in 1851 or 1852, leaving her a widow at the age of 20 with an infant. Eliswa then chose to dedicate her life to prayer, solitude, and service to the poor, settling in a simple bamboo hut on her family property.
Life and Work
The foundation of the Third Order of Discalced Carmelites and the commitment to the education of girls.
In 1862, Eliswa met Father Leopoldo Beccaro, an Italian Discalced Carmelite missionary who discerned her vocation. Her daughter Anna and her younger sister Thresia joined her. On February 12, 1866, Msgr. Bernardine Baccinelli signed the decree for the erection of the new community. The following day, they settled into their bamboo convent in Koonammavu, founding the Third Order of Discalced Carmelites (TOCD), the first indigenous female religious congregation in Kerala. In 1868, she founded the first convent school, a boarding school, and an orphanage for girls in Kerala. Later, the community split into two branches: the Carmelite Teresian Congregation (CTC) and the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC). Mother Eliswa spent her final years at the Saint Joseph convent in Varapuzha, where she died on July 18, 1913.
