Biography
Birth in Campanha to an enslaved woman, his apprenticeship, his vocation hindered by racial prejudice, and his admission to the seminary of Mariana thanks to Bishop Viçoso.
Francisco de Paula Victor was born on April 12, 1827, in Vila da Campanha da Princesa (today Campanha), in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He was the natural son of a black slave, Lourença Justiniana de Jesus, and an unknown father. Baptized on April 20, 1827, his godmother was Marianna de Santa Barbara Ferreira, who taught him to read, write, play the piano, and speak French. Although an apprentice tailor, he ardently desired to become a priest, a project deemed impossible for a man of color under the regime of slavery. Supported by his godmother and by Bishop Antônio Ferreira Viçoso of Mariana, he entered the seminary of Mariana on June 5, 1849. Despite the discrimination of his peers, which he overcame through his humility, he was ordained a priest on June 14, 1851.
Life and Work
Father Victor's pastoral ministry in Três Pontas, where he overcame initial hostility to become a beloved parish priest, builder, and dedicated educator.
After one year as a vicar in Campanha, Father Francisco de Paula Victor was appointed to Três Pontas in June 1852, first as a vicar and then as a parish priest. His arrival sparked rejection from the local white elite due to his servile origins. Faced with humiliations, he responded with absolute poverty and immense charity. During his 53 years of ministry, he transformed the parish: he had the church of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda erected and founded the College of the Holy Family (Colégio Sagrada Família), a free school open to all children without distinction of race or class. He taught there himself. Having become deeply loved by his parishioners, he passed away on September 23, 1905, at the age of 78.
