    Biography

The life of Tiburcio Arnáiz Muñoz, from his birth in Valladolid to his entry into the Society of Jesus.

Tiburcio Arnáiz Muñoz was born on August 11, 1865, in Valladolid, Spain, into a modest family of weavers. His parents, Ezequiel Arnáiz and Romualda Muñoz, had him baptized two days later, on August 13, in the parish church of San Andrés. Orphaned of his father at the age of five, his mother had to work hard to provide for his needs and those of his older sister, Gregoria. At the age of 13, he entered the minor seminary of Valladolid. To help his family financially, he worked as a sacristan at the convent of the Dominican nuns of San Felipe de la Penitencia. He was ordained a priest on April 20, 1890. He first exercised his ministry as a parish priest in Villanueva de Duero from 1893 to 1896, then obtained a doctorate in theology in Toledo in 1896. He was subsequently appointed parish priest in Poyales del Hoyo. After the death of his mother, and while his sister Gregoria entered the Dominican order, he realized his deep desire to enter the Society of Jesus on March 30, 1902. He completed his novitiate in Granada, then was sent on mission to Murcia and Loyola. In 1912, he was assigned to Málaga, the city where he would spend the rest of his life (with the exception of one year spent in Cádiz between 1916 and 1917).

    Life and Work

Father Arnáiz's apostolic action among the poor of Málaga and the foundation of the Missionaries of Rural Doctrines.

In Málaga, Father Arnáiz distinguished himself by his tireless apostolic zeal among the most destitute. He began his work in the "corralones," unsanitary interior courtyards where poor working-class families from the city's outskirts were crowded together. There, he organized a system of literacy, material aid, and catechesis, supported by a group of lay collaborators. In 1922, noting the spiritual and cultural abandonment of the Spanish countryside, he founded, in collaboration with María Isabel González del Valle Sarandeses, the association of the Misioneras de las Doctrinas Rurales (Missionaries of Rural Doctrines). This innovative project consisted of sending lay catechists to live for several months in isolated villages or mountain hamlets (such as the Sierra de Gibralgalia). These women taught reading, writing, hygiene, and Christian doctrine there, preparing children for the sacraments. Father Arnáiz constantly traveled through these difficult regions to support and encourage his missionaries. At the same time, he preached numerous popular missions, gave the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius, visited prisoners and the sick in hospitals, and promoted various charitable works.

    Path to holiness

The reputation for holiness of Father Arnáiz, his death in 1926, and the opening of his cause for beatification.

The reputation for holiness of Father Arnáiz, nicknamed the "apostle of Málaga," spread widely during his lifetime. In June 1926, while preaching the novena of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he fell gravely ill. Suffering from a high fever, he was diagnosed with bronchopneumonia. He passed away on July 18, 1926, in Málaga, at the age of 60. His funeral gave rise to an immense manifestation of popular fervor, and his remains were interred in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Málaga. The cause for beatification was officially opened on December 5, 1989, under the pontificate of John Paul II. The diocesan inquiry took place in Málaga from 1990 to 1995. On October 10, 2016, Pope Francis signed the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, thereby declaring him venerable.

    Beatification and canonization

The recognition of a miracle and the celebration of Father Arnáiz's beatification in 2018.

On December 18, 2017, Pope Francis officially approved a miracle attributed to the intercession of Father Arnáiz. It concerns the scientifically inexplicable healing of Manuel Antonio Lucena García, a 41-year-old resident of Málaga. In June 1994, the latter suffered an acute myocardial infarction that left him in cardiorespiratory arrest and deprived of oxygen for approximately ten minutes, plunging him into a deep coma. While doctors gave him no hope of survival, his sister, a fervent devotee of Father Arnáiz, asked the whole family to pray to the Jesuit. After nine days, the patient woke up and recovered completely, suddenly and without any neurological or cardiac sequelae. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on October 20, 2018, in the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Málaga. It was presided over, in the name of Pope Francis, by Cardinal Angelo Becciu, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, in the presence of numerous bishops, priests, and faithful.
