    Biography

Youth, formation, and early priestly ministry of Vicente Garrido Pastor, marked by the ordeal of the Spanish Civil War.

Isidro Vicente Garrido Pastor was born on November 12, 1896, in Benaguasil, in the province of Valencia, Spain. He was the youngest of seven children of Isidro Garrido and Desamparados Pastor, a deeply Christian farming family. In 1910, he began his ecclesiastical studies at the Conciliar Seminary of Valencia, then joined the Real Colegio del Corpus Christi in Valencia. He was ordained a priest on June 12, 1921, in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Valencia by Archbishop Enrique Reig y Casanova. The following year, in 1922, he obtained his doctorate in theology at the Pontifical University of Valencia. He began his priestly ministry as a vicar in Benimassot, then in Albaida. At the same time, he taught philosophy and theology to seminarians. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Vicente Garrido Pastor was forced to go into hiding to escape religious persecution. He spent a long period concealed in an extremely narrow space (the wine press of his family home in Benaguasil), while militiamen occupied the premises. It was during this ordeal of solitude and danger that he composed a prayer of trust to the Virgin of Sorrows. After the war, he continued his ministry and was appointed penitentiary canon of the Cathedral of Valencia in 1956.

    Life and Work

The foundation of the Secular Institute of the Workers of the Cross for the evangelization of the female working world.

The great apostolic work of Vicente Garrido Pastor is the foundation of the Secular Institute of the Workers of the Cross (Instituto Secular Obreras de la Cruz). Aware of the rapid de-Christianization of the working world and the vulnerability of young women entering the labor market in factories and workshops, he wished to promote the active role of the laity, and particularly of women, in evangelization. On February 13, 1934, he gathered a first group of women in Burjassot for a spiritual retreat. A few months later, he drafted the statutes of a civil association, the Sociedad Amor Cristiano (Society of Christian Love), which formed the initial nucleus of his foundation. This association was recognized as a Pious Union in 1940. On October 21, 1964, the Archbishop of Valencia, Msgr. Marcelino Olaechea, canonically erected the association as a Secular Institute of diocesan right under the name Obreras de la Cruz. On June 12, 1971, the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes, with the approval of Pope Paul VI, approved the constitutions of the institute and granted it the status of pontifical right (Decretum laudis). On that day, which also marked the founder's golden priestly jubilee, Pope Paul VI named him a Prelate of Honor of His Holiness. The institute developed rapidly in Spain before expanding into other countries in Europe and America.
