    Biography

Born into the high Sicilian nobility, Francesco Paolo Gravina overcame marital betrayal through a profound spiritual conversion and a commitment to the most destitute.

Francesco Paolo Gravina was born on February 5, 1800, in Palermo, into the illustrious family of the Princes of Palagonia [1.1.1]. Having lost his mother in 1805, he became the sole heir to an immense fortune and received the title of eighth Prince of Palagonia and Lercara Friddi. Educated in a solid Christian faith, he initially led a carefree youth typical of his rank. In 1819, he married Nicoletta Filangieri Pignatelli, daughter of the Prince of Cutò. However, his wife's repeated infidelity quickly turned this union into a painful ordeal. After ten years of inner suffering, the couple separated in 1829. Far from sinking into despair or resentment, Francesco Paolo experienced this tragedy as a call to a radical conversion. He chose to remain strictly faithful to the sacrament of marriage by refusing any remarriage. Desiring to dedicate his life to God, he entered the Franciscan Third Order at the Gancia convent in Palermo. From then on, he redirected his entire existence and fortune toward the service of the poorest and the outcasts of society. He passed away in Palermo on April 15, 1854, exhausted by a life of immense sacrifices and uninterrupted charity.

    Life and Work

An exemplary public administrator and mayor of Palermo, he founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity to institutionalize aid for the destitute.

Combining his civic duties with his faith, Francesco Paolo Gravina was appointed praetor (mayor) of Palermo from 1832 to 1834. During his mandate, he conceived the "Deposito di Mendicità" (Mendicity Depot), an innovative institution designed to offer the homeless not only shelter and food, but also education and vocational training to foster their social reintegration. During the terrible cholera epidemic that struck Sicily in 1837, while the majority of the nobles and the wealthy fled the city, the prince courageously chose to remain in Palermo to personally care for the sick and assist the dying. That same year, with the approval of the Archbishop of Palermo, Cardinal Ferdinando Pignatelli, he obtained a royal rescript to found the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity (Suore di Carità del Principe di Palagonia). In 1839, he also assumed the presidency of the Reale Albergo dei Poveri, transforming his own palaces into reception centers. Through these foundations, he laid the groundwork for modern and structured social assistance, entirely animated by evangelical love.

    Journey toward holiness

Nicknamed the "prince of the poor," he shines through his heroic humility, his absolute marital fidelity, and his life of intense prayer.

The holiness of Francesco Paolo Gravina is rooted in an intimate union with Christ, nourished by daily participation in Mass and long hours of adoration. Despite his immense fortune and prestigious titles, he chose to live in an evangelical simplicity that struck his contemporaries. His spiritual journey was marked by a heroic virtue of forgiveness: despite his wife's betrayal, he refused to divorce, continued to love her spiritually, and prayed for her until his last breath. Nicknamed the "prince of the poor" or the "prince of the least," he demonstrated such profound humility that he constantly strove to conceal his charitable works, attributing his initiatives to others so as not to draw attention to himself. His charity was not mere philanthropy, but a true contemplation of the suffering Christ through the most disfigured members of Palermitan society.

    Beatification and canonization

Declared Venerable by Pope Francis in 2017, his cause for beatification highlights his example of lay holiness.

The reputation of holiness of Francesco Paolo Gravina has endured through generations in Palermo. His cause for beatification was officially opened on December 20, 1990, under the impetus of Cardinal Salvatore Pappalardo, Archbishop of Palermo. The diocesan inquiry, which gathered numerous testimonies and historical documents, was closed on October 30, 2000, by Cardinal Salvatore De Giorgi. The file was then transmitted to Rome to be examined by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On October 9, 2017, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, thus conferring upon him the title of Venerable. Although he is not yet beatified and does not have a universal liturgical feast, his memory is faithfully commemorated each year on April 15, the anniversary of his birth into Heaven, particularly in Sicily and within his religious family.
