    Biography

Birth in Rome in 1782, youth, studies at the Roman College, and entry into the Passionists in 1801.

Lorenzo Gaetano Maria Salvi was born in Rome on October 30, 1782, within the palace of the Counts of Carpegna. His father, Antonio Salvi, was its administrator, and his mother, Marianna Biondi, died one month after his birth. Raised by his stepmother Anna Maria Costa, he studied at the Roman College with Gaspare del Bufalo and formed a friendship with Mauro Cappellari (the future Pope Gregory XVI). Marked at the age of eleven by a sermon from Vincent-Maria Strambi, he felt the religious call. Despite his father's reluctance in the face of the anti-religious climate, he entered the Passionist novitiate at Monte Argentario on November 14, 1801, under the name Lorenzo Maria of Saint Francis Xavier. He pronounced his vows in 1802 and was ordained a priest on December 29, 1805.

    Life and Work

Exile under Napoleon, spiritual experience in Pieve Torina, duties as superior, and preaching of popular missions.

In 1809, the suppression of religious orders by Napoleon Bonaparte forced Father Lorenzo into exile. Taking refuge clandestinely in Pieve Torina, he fell gravely ill there and developed a deep devotion to the Child Jesus. After the fall of the Empire, he returned to Rome and assumed numerous duties as superior (rector) in Terracina, Monte Argentario, Todi, Vetralla, and Rome, while being elected provincial councilor six times. He dedicated himself intensely to preaching popular missions and retreats in several Italian regions. He died of an apoplexy on June 12, 1856, during a pastoral visit to Capranica.

    Path to holiness

Introduction of the cause for beatification in 1923, theological difficulties, and recognition of heroic virtues in 1988.

The reputation for holiness of Father Lorenzo Maria spread rapidly after his death. His cause for beatification was introduced in Rome on February 28, 1923, but suffered delays due to theological discussions regarding his devotion to the Child Jesus and his nervous health. Revived in 1983 with a new Positio in 1984, the cause progressed until the declaration of the heroic nature of his virtues. On February 19, 1988, Pope John Paul II promulgated the decree declaring him Venerable.

    Beatification and canonization

Recognition of a miraculous healing and solemn beatification by Pope John Paul II in 1989.

A scientifically inexplicable miracle of healing concerning a nun suffering from a serious stomach ailment was recognized by decree on November 28, 1988. Pope John Paul II celebrated the solemn beatification of Lorenzo Salvi on October 1, 1989, in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican, praising his role as a propagator of devotion to the Child Jesus. His mortal remains rest today in the church of the Passionist retreat of Sant'Angelo in Cura di Vetralla.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

Spirituality centered on the Passion and the childhood of Jesus, distribution of statuettes and iconography.

The spirituality of Blessed Lorenzo Maria is based on the Passion of Christ and on spiritual childhood. Nicknamed the "apostle of the Child Jesus," he committed himself by vow in 1815 to propagate this devotion, contemplating the Son of God made poor and weak in the manger. To spread this devotion, he wrote works, preached, and made small wax or wooden statuettes of the Child Jesus himself, which he called "my little emperor." In iconography, he is represented in the black habit of the Passionists, holding or presenting the Child Jesus.
