    Biography

Youth and formation of Libério Rodrigues Moreira in Brazil.

Libério Rodrigues Moreira was born on June 30, 1884, in Lagoa Santa, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He was the son of Joaquim Rodrigues de Castro and Francisca Moreira da Costa. Coming from an extremely modest family of seven children, he grew up in conditions of great poverty. His father passed away when he was only seven years old, which forced him to interrupt his studies to help his family. He first worked as an ox-cart driver (carreiro) on various farms in the region. In 1902, at the age of 18, the family moved to Mateus Leme, where Libério worked as a mason's assistant and then as a mason. During his free time, he served as a sacristan for his cousin, Father Joaquim Paulo Vieira. It was during this time that he felt a deep call to the priesthood. Thanks to the financial support of his cousin and a scholarship from the Archdiocese of Mariana, he was finally able to enter the seminary of Mariana at the beginning of 1906.
