    Biography

The life of Kadalikkattil Mathai Kathanar, from his birth in 1872 in Edappady to his priestly ministry in Palai and Karoor.

Kadalikkattil Mathai Kathanar (known as Father Mathew Kadalikkattil) was a priest of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, born on April 25, 1872, in Edappady (Kerala, India) and died on May 23, 1935, in Palai (Kerala, India). The second son of Cherian (or Zacharias) and Rosa, he grew up in the pious Kadalikkattil family. He studied the liturgical Syriac language with a local priest before being directed by Bishop Charles Lavigne to the seminary of the Syrian Carmelite monastery of Mannanam. He was ordained a priest in February 1901 by Bishop Mathew Makil. After his ordination, he spent two years as vicar at St. Thomas parish in Palai. In 1903, he became parish priest in Karoor, where he developed a great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1906, he was transferred to St. Mary's Church in Lalam, Palai, where his pastoral zeal led him to be compared to the Curé of Ars. In 1910, he returned to St. Thomas Cathedral in Palai as assistant vicar.

    Life and Work

The foundation of the Sacred Heart Congregation and Father Mathew's social commitment to the most destitute.

The life and work of Father Mathew Kadalikkattil are inseparable from the foundation of the Sacred Heart Congregation (SH), a religious institute for women of the Syro-Malabar Church. Inspired during his adorations before the Blessed Sacrament, he founded this congregation to propagate devotion to the Sacred Heart and to help orphans, abandoned elderly people, and poor women. With the authorization of Bishop Mathew Makil, he welcomed the first four candidates on January 1, 1911, in Palai. Despite a forced temporary affiliation with the Clarist sisters in 1918, the institute's own identity was restored on June 24, 1931, by Bishop James Kalassery, and approved by Pope Pius XI in 1935. At the same time, Father Mathew invested himself in education by founding a primary school for the Harijans in Kannadiurumbu in 1918, the St. Mary's Girls' High School in Lalam in 1925, and the Pampoorampara pilgrimage center in 1930.
